The class is held in the upper hall of the Cluny Centre on a Monday and Thursday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and the students usually attend class for approximately 30 minutes per subject within this time. There is on street parking available in the surrounding streets and it is also close to an excellent bus service.
Visits to class are enjoyable and confidence boosting, with students receiving positive feedback from Christine the Instructor, and her excellent team of assistants – some of who have completed years of Kumon study themselves or are at University studying Maths or English.
Children are always welcomed into the class by Christine or an assistant and are guided through the class routine until it is familiar to them and they are able to organise themselves without help.
Independence and self-confidence develop class by class as students' self-esteem increases and they begin to take responsibility for their own learning.
Completed homework is exchanged for new work and while classwork is being completed records are updated and changes made to individual programmes of study, if required. (Completed daily worksheets have been marked at home and all corrections done before coming into class)
In class, students will be working on a variety of topics depending on their position within their individual programme. These include working on the next part of their course, learning new skills or completing an end-of-level assessment. Classwork is supervised by Christine and her team and individual guidance is given to students, as required.
While work is being marked students can complete additional activities to further develop their understanding of their subject. Activities include number board challenges, wrap up maths sums and there is also a library from which students can borrow books free of charge.
As soon as work has been marked, students correct any errors so that that can complete and understand each piece of work to a 100% on a daily basis. They then see Christine to discuss their work and receive Feedback on their performance, guidance on their way forward, and it is also an opportunity for Christine to give lots of praise and encouragement.
Finally, they collect their reward stickers before leaving with their homework assignments.
There are various motivational tools in place in class - class stickers for completion of work, for homework being marked, Certificates for the completion of levels and various challenges throughout the year with prizes to be awarded.
