"Kumon is not always fun because it is challenging, but it is always successful provided parent, Instructor and student work in partnership."
Once or twice a week, your child will attend the study centre. Visits to class last approximately 30 - 40 minutes dependent on how many subjects are being studied. Children find coming to class an enjoyable and confidence boosting experience as they receive positive feedback from the Instructor and class assistants on their work and progression.
Coming to class also enables children to see what new work they might be moving on to next and enables the Instructor to observe your child and provide appropriate guidance.
Students are welcomed and guided through the class routine until it is familiar to them and they are able to organise themselves without help. Completed homework is exchanged for new class and homework before starting their work for the day.
Younger students on the early levels of the programmes will be looked after by and work with either the Instructor or an assistant. Gradually, as they become more independent, these students will also work on their own.
While the work is being marked, students are able to take part in a number of additional activities to support their learning. These include mental arithmetic, times tables practice and a chance to beat their fastest time sequencing numbers on the Kumon Numberboard. There is also a selection of reading books which can be read in class. Once work has been marked, students return to their desks to do any corrections so that they can learn from their mistakes.
Students correct any errors in their work as soon as it has been marked, before seeing the Instructor for positive feedback on their performance and guidance on their way forward. Students are rewarded with a sticker system in class for doing their work every day, having it marked and corrected, coming to class, and passing achievement tests. Completed sticker cards can then be exchanged for prizes.
Whatever the activity, the aim of the class visit is to encourage students to aim high and to build self-confidence and excellent study skills that will equip them for life. Other motivational events include the annual National Advanced Student Roll Ceremony. The students are awarded certificates and medals, in recognition of reaching an exceptional level of achievement relative to their age.
Enrolment Procedure
If you would like to explore further whether Kumon is right for you as a family, please contact us to book an enrolment session. This is a meeting between the parent, child and Instructor to clarify our individual roles within Kumon and to find out where on the programme your child would start if they did enrol. At the session your child will be asked to sit a diagnostic test which is designed to show what they currently find easy. This test is not a "pass or fail" exam but a piece of work aimed at diagnosing your child's current ability.
Homework
Your child will receive individually tailored work every day and on non-class days will complete the work at home. This generally takes 10 - 20 minutes per subject a day and you will be provided with an answer book to mark your child's homework. Marking your child's work daily will encourage them to adopt good daily study habits and to correct their work immediately. This will also help to keep you informed of your child's progress.
