"I find schoolwork easier to understand and complete. My mental arithmetic has improved and I can do my sums in my head."
Peter Rogers (aged 9), Yate Study Centre

About the centre

The history of Kumon Swansea, Mumbles

Kumon first started in All Saints Church Hall in September 2002. In the beginning only mathematics was offered, English was introduced at the centre in January 2006. By the end of 2006 the number of students had increased and Kumon had outgrown All Saints Church Hall.

In January 2007 Kumon moved to Grange School, West Cross where it spread across two classrooms. The first room was the reception/reading room and the second room was the quiet room for working. The school was very supportive and again numbers grew. As time progressed former students started becoming assistants helping to share their experiences with younger children. In September 2011 Kumon relocated to the Linden Christian Centre, our current home.

What happens at class?
Let's use Isabel as an example. The centre opens at 3.30pm and students start arriving. Isabel arrives with her Kumon box containing her weeks completed work. Her first task is to swap her work, collecting new work and handing in completed work. She then sits down in the quiet end of the hall where she completes the day's worksheets. The Kumon Instructor and assistants are on hand to help her if she gets stuck. Meanwhile additional assistants are writing up Isabel's homework scores and times in her record book. The record book is used by the Instructor to record work and plan future work.

When Isabel has completed her work it is handed in for marking and then she does a numberboard or times table. The assistants or Instructor give Isabel feedback on today's work and highlight next week's topics and goals. Isabel then picks up her box containing next week's work and goes home. All this takes about 30 minutes and students can arrive anytime between 3.30pm to 5.15pm, the centre closes at 5.45pm.

Communication
Parents are involved in the day to day process of Kumon. Parents are required to support and encourage students to complete their work everyday. Work should be marked daily to give feedback and to see day to day progress. The Kumon Instructor is available by phone, text and email to support parents during the week. Formal feedback is given to parents and children at the end of every level and on yearly anniversaries. Progress meetings are held in the summer term to prepare for the summer holidays and next term.
