The centre was established in 2012 and is based in Yardley Wood Library. It is a beautiful building that has recently been refurbished. It has high ceilings so is very light and airy and provides an appropriate study environment. As the class lasts up to 30-40 minutes per subject, parents or siblings can use the computer or read and borrow books while the child attends class. There is also a dedicated area for the parents to wait. Some car parking is offered on-site but ample parking is available on the street.
The current age range of children in the study centre is from three years old to 14 years old, but Kumon caters for children of all ages and abilities. Children can enrol as early as pre-school, and Kumon is attended by students throughout primary and secondary school but it's always preferable to start at a younger age. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
Once students have completed their class work, there is a dedicated area where they can complete activities on the Numberboards to increase their concentration, speed and recognition of number skills. In addition to this, there is an area to practice multiplication tables, do oral reading with the Instructor and assistants, and there is an area dedicated for early learners, who are two to four years old.
In addition to the Kumon Instructor there are three trained Kumon assistants, who help and guide students with their class work and other activities within the class.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
