Ampthill Study Centre

About this centre

The centre opened in 2001. Since then, several hundred students ranging in age from three to 47 years old have enjoyed the benefits of studying maths and English using the Kumon Method. The majority of students at the centre currently range in age from four to 16 years old.

The centre is conveniently located in the meeting rooms at the Parkside Community Hall in the centre of Ampthill. Most students are able to walk straight from the neighbouring schools to the centre, whilst others travel from Flitwick and the many surrounding villages around Ampthill.

The supportive atmosphere in the study centre encourages children to quickly become independent, confident learners, able to organise themselves and their work. The Instructor at the centre is always on hand to guide and motivate students. Several assistants from the local upper school, many of whom have been Kumon students themselves, provide additional support with marking, reading and oral maths work.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

My name is Theresa Burnett and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2001. I first came across Kumon after starting to home-educate my three children. I was immediately impressed by Kumon's philosophy of individualised study and commitment to developing each child's full potential; ideals which were very much in line with my values as a parent. As a home educator, I was aware of how different children are, both in terms of how they learn and how they are motivated. I truly believe that given the right skills and support there is no limit to what a child can achieve.

With more than 15 years’ experience as a Kumon parent and Instructor, I believe I have gained a valuable insight into meeting each child's individual needs. I am patient and empathetic, supporting both student and parent along their Kumon journey.

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is watching a child grow in confidence, often starting as an unsure, reluctant student then blossoming into a self-assured young person who is willing to tackle any new work with confidence. It's also a great feeling when you bump into an ex-student or parent later in life and they remember how much Kumon has helped them reach their goals.
