About this centre

The centre has been running in Archway since 1994 and provides maths and English programmes for students of all ages and abilities; currently the youngest student is three years old.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The majority of the students at the centre are studying at a level which is six months or more ahead of their school level. Their parents have often commented on how their child's confidence and attitude have developed positively through their Kumon journey.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

There are about equal numbers of maths and English students and the centre has developed particular expertise with students whose first language is not English.

There is a dedicated team of multi-lingual young assistants, most of whom have gone through the Kumon programmes themselves. The centre has considerable experience in working with young learners, from nursery age onwards, many of whom develop into long term success stories through Kumon.

Many of the students attend schools within the area and live locally.

My name is Gill Hoggard and I am the Instructor at the Archway Study Centre.

I have had a long career in teaching both in Britain and overseas, initially specialising in English as a foreign language. More than 20 years ago I retrained in maths and computing and ran a centre for children's computer studies; I also worked as an Ofsted inspector for a number of years. In this way, I got to see a great deal of maths in schools, both primary and secondary.

Since 1994, I have run the Archway Study Centre. My three children have all benefitted from Kumon and some of my earliest students are now teachers. We currently have a thriving class of whom about one third speak English as an additional language, and the majority are working above their school level in maths and English.

I have stuck with Kumon through thick and thin - the older I get, the more I see the benefits. It's lovely to meet former pupils or parents and to hear they are studying maths at university or winning scholarships and short-story competitions - or just a lot happier at school.

Do please call me to discuss how we can help your child achieve - possibly more than you ever imagined.
