About this centre

The centre is well established and has supported many students from the Balham area since it opened in 2000.

Many students at the Balham Study Centre come via personal recommendation from local primary and secondary schools, as well as several private schools. The maths and English study programmes offered at the centre help students of all ages and abilities to realise their potential both at school and beyond. At present, students at the centre range from pre-schoolers to secondary school age students. Many of the students have been with the Balham centre for several years and have grown to work independently and confidently, which has enabled many of them to reach and stay in the top sets at school.

Along with the Instructor, James Dacie, the centre's team of experienced and dedicated assistants are on hand to help the Instructor with the smooth running of the centre. New students receive more one-to-one attention at the start of their Kumon journey so that quickly learn the class routine and the essential study skills needed to progress with ease.

The general atmosphere at the centre is very friendly and students see the Instructor during class for the chance to talk about their current work and goals so that they can be given appropriate feedback on their progress.

My name is James Dacie and I have been involved in teaching all my working life. Firstly, I was a teacher and then course director of two language schools In London. After that I taught for several years at South Thames College in the Wandsworth and Tooting centres, and since September 2000 I have been the Instructor at the Kumon Balham Study Centre.

It is very exciting to be able to help those students who are struggling with their school work, as well as challenging those students who are excelling in maths and English. I love the opportunity to be involved with the education of individual students over many years, often seeing them develop their skills from primary school to GCSE level and beyond.

My role as Kumon Instructor is to guide and motivate my students whilst helping them develop their own independent skills. For me, the most rewarding part of being an Instructor is seeing my students become more confident individuals, helping them grow and develop along their Kumon journey.
