The unique Kumon programmes aim to pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised study.
Brixton Study Centre has developed a reputation for excellence among local parents: most new students are referrals from past or current Kumon parents.
Classes take place on the ground floor of St Matthews, a beautiful listed building situated across the road from the Ritzy Cinema and Brixton Library.
Children of all ages and abilities benefit from our individualised study plans: some attend to enjoy academic stretch beyond school expectations, others because they want to catch up. With our support, all are usually working ahead of the school curriculum inside their first year of study with us.
We also enjoy working with nursery and reception children: tiny children have big minds that are highly receptive to the right kind of gentle learning. We have a special young learners section, where children learning to read, write and count work one-to-one with dedicated staff. Children capable of working independently, study in the body of the class; directly under my guidance, supported by markers and classroom assistants. Classes operate on a drop-in basis, with each child working on classwork tailored to their individual requirements.
I'm Yasmin Fitzpatrick and I decided to open a new study centre in Brixton in 2012 when I saw how Kumon study had benefitted my own daughter. I live locally and also felt that somewhere as energetic and pioneering as Brixton should have its own Kumon centre for children in the area.
Within a year of my daughter enrolling on the Kumon programmes, she had made huge progress: her marks improved at school, she was much more confident in maths class and more confident generally about learning. Her maths teacher had noticed changes in the first six months, especially in terms of her speed and accuracy in mental maths.
I'm very impressed by the children who have made such wonderful progress at the Brixton Study Centre; as well as the parents who have the consistency and trust required to guide their children through the occasional difficult patch. I enjoy working with Kumon students, whether they start out struggling in class, or are already high flyers seeking new challenges.
I remain impressed by a method that can help a child blossom, not just in terms of their maths and English work, but also by helping them acquire the type of study skills and mental attitude that will equip them well for life.
