About this centre

The centre was opened in 1997 and is now a thriving and important part of the local community. The majority of students live in the local area and attend local schools, while other students travel from surrounding areas on the outskirts of Chelmsford.

Students are of all ages and abilities; at present, the youngest student is four years old and the oldest student is 16. Ability levels of the students range from very high to those who struggle with maths and English.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. A highly dedicated team of staff help in the running of the centre, making sure that students achieve their goals on every visit.

Early learners and newly-enrolled students receive guided self-study from a member of the team, in both written and oral work.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider; rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who are ultimately able to face unfamiliar work with confidence, as well as challenges in the wider world.

Hi, my name is Mangala Lele and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Chelmsford South Study Centre.

After graduating with a BSc I undertook several jobs in the textile industry; it in within this profession I became aware of the importance of good literacy and numeracy skills. I had to produce information in a clear and concise mannner, for example, producing spreadsheets and other data that was accessible to all levels of manufacturing and managerial staff.

My initial interest in Kumon came from watching my nephew completing his work with little or no help at all. I was not only impressed with the worksheets but also with the Kumon Method. The idea of working at one's own pace and on an individualised pathway particularly appealed to me, and I decided to establish my own centre.

The programme has enabled countless students to reach their potential, allowing them to learn from their mistakes in a safe and supportive environment. I have seen previously struggling students looking forward to the challenge of progressing to higher levels; out-shining their peers in maths and English.

The training I received and practical experience over the last 20 years has allowed me to help countless students to reach their potential. It is this that motivates and keeps me enthusiastic about Kumon.
