About this centre

The Harrogate Centre has been established for over 20 years and provides a peaceful working environment to support children studying on Kumon's unique maths and English study programmes. Our aim is to develop confident, independent young learners, who have the skills and ability to thrive at school and beyond.

Supporting the Instructor, Cate Thomas, has a team of motivated assistants, many of whom have studied on the Kumon programmes themselves. They help ensure appropriate support and encouragement is given to each and every student.

New students and early learners are, initially, closely monitored by the assistants and the Instructor in a dedicated area. Once they have developed effective study skills, they will begin to work independently, though still under our guidance. The objective is to further develop their confidence and encourage self-learning, so they can go on to reach their full potential.

Students attend on a drop-in basis and are not limited to a rigid time. We are open from 3.45pm until 5.45pm and the last admittance, to allow for uninterrupted study, is at 5.15pm.

My name is Cate Thomas, and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2002. It was a natural career progression for me having come from a corporate training background, but wanting to work with children and run my own business.

Having initially run the Kumon Wetherby Study Centre, I moved on to acquire the Kumon Harrogate Study Centre in 2007. This has been a thriving centre which has helped numerous students over the years.

I believe in maintaining helpful and friendly guidance with all my students. I encourage them to become independent learners and to take responsibility for their own study. They are also actively encouraged to learn from their mistakes. It is extremely rewarding seeing their sense of achievement when they excel. I also believe it is a solid foundation for succeeding in today’s academic and professional environments.

I have been told by students themselves many times about their successes in both school work and examinations - this has been the ultimate reward for me.

I look forward to welcoming both you and your child to my centre.
