About this centre

The Hedge End Kumon Study Centre offers maths and English programmes for students of all ages and abilities.

As well as having daily work to complete at home, students attend classes each week at a time slot agreed at enrolment. Students are encouraged to work independently from the outset although the Instructor and assistants are on hand to observe and guide them through the programmes and to give regular feedback.

Good communication between home and the study centre is very important and whilst this is not possible during sessions, a message book is available for parents to request a meeting with or phone call from the Instructor.

When students have completed their work they can visit the book corner while they wait for their sheets to be marked. For younger students there is also the opportunity to take the number board challenge in order to improve their number recognition, sequencing and motor skills.

Hello, my name is Jane Corcoran and I am the Instructor at the Hedge End Study Centre.

I started my career as an Accountant, working both for medium-sized companies as well as smaller local businesses. I have two sons and when they started school I went back to university to retrain as a primary school teacher. I taught in a number of different schools in the Winchester area for 10 years; I worked mainly in key stage 2 classes but have taught every age group from reception to year six.

I have a particular interest in maths but recognise how important it is for children to have strong skills in both maths and English. My role as a Kumon Instructor allows me to combine all the skills and experiences from my accountancy and teaching careers.

My aim is to provide a calm, quiet working environment at my centre where children feel confident to learn and develop study skills for life. I enjoy working with students of all ages, guiding them through the maths and English programmes, and watching them develop academically as well as becoming confident, independent learners.
