About this centre

The Hinckley Study Centre provides maths and English programmes for students of all ages and abilities. Most of the students attend schools within the area and live in the local community, with some travelling from further afield to study at the centre.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Students currently range from pre-school to high school and beyond. To assist the fully qualified Instructor with the smooth running of the class, there are three fully trained assistants and two markers in the centre to help with the needs of the students.

Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.

My name is Fiona Lucas. I have been the Hinckley Study Centre Instructor since September 2008.

Well, after extensive training and completing many of the Kumon worksheets myself (so that I could understand exactly what the children have to do), I became the Instructor for Hinckley centre, and haven't looked back since. Both of my children study the Kumon programmes, so I can see from a parent's perspective what happens at home as well as class.

It is a very rewarding job and my aim for this centre is to promote a nurturing environment of growth and understanding for my students. My role is to guide and motivate students through the programmes, to set goals and targets together to ensure they are progressing and reaching their potential. Doing a little bit of work every day can have such an impact on a child's development and confidence.

I hold award ceremonies during the year where the students receive certificates for achieving certain levels within the programmes. This is one of my favourite parts of the job as I get to see all of my students together celebrating their hard work and success.
