About this centre

The Kumon Newry Study Centre opened in 2015 and offers individualised study programmes in maths and English to students of all ages and abilities.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands.

Our students range in age from five to 16 years old, and many attend primary and secondary schools within the local area. Each week students are allocated a time slot of 30 to 45 minutes, per subject studied, wherein they complete their classwork and have their homework recorded. Each student leaves knowing they have moved along in their studies, and with the confidence that they will be able to complete their daily Kumon homework.

Parents are given regular updates on how their children are progressing by email, telephone and scheduled meetings. They also see the delight of the children when they move up a level and take home a certificate and prize. Above all, students gain a sense of achievement, which boosts their confidence in their school life and beyond.

My name is Elbeth Clarke and I am the Instructor at the Newry Study Centre.

I am passionate about life-long learning and aim to support my students to develop their study skills and enjoy learning from an early age.

It is rewarding helping a child work through a problem and see them grow in confidence. I have enjoyed getting to know my students and their families, learning about their goals and aspirations and then finding a way to guide them as they work towards those targets. Each child is different and changing all the time, so I use my observations to tailor their work so it is just right for them.

Often students come to the centre with a fear of the subject they have been finding difficult, and the best reward as an Instructor is seeing this change in mindset, when they relax, drop the tense posture and open their work with the confidence that they can complete it. It is great to see a student begin to enjoy learning and who continues to keep improving, often far beyond their own expectations.

I hope to welcome you and your children to the study centre very soon.
