The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The centre, which was established in 2005, currently supports over 140 children, many of whom attend schools within Portishead. Some students also travel to class from a much wider geographical area including Nailsea, Clevedon and Weston Super Mare.

Students are invited to attend as many classes per week as is desired and the centre offers flexibility in attendance options. Whilst many students only attend once per week, they have the option to attend more often during times when extra help is required.

The centre caters for students of all ages and abilities and students learn to work independently through their tailored programme. An initial assessment will show their current skill set, and together with the parents and student, a plan is made which will allow the student to build on their skills, further their knowledge and excel both in and beyond the classroom.

A dedicated team of eight assistants support the students’ development in class. The team includes a number of qualified teachers, as well as Kumon parents, Kumon students and Kumon programme Completers.

As an Ofsted registered centre, parents can make considerable savings through various schemes.

About the Instructor

Portishead - Vicky West

My name is Vicky West and in 2005, I became the first ever former Kumon student in the UK to become an Instructor! Today, the Kumon Portishead Study Centre is currently ranked as the 11th top performing centre in all of Europe and Africa and I am proud to have earned the status of an Elite Instructor for the last two years running.

As a Kumon parent, I am immensely proud to see the benefits of the programme reflecting in my children’s school results. Being a Kumon Instructor is a rewarding and satisfying role. I love being involved in the process of educating individual students to go on to surpass not only their own, but others people’s expectations of them, and achieve what they once thought was impossible.

Developing confidence and fostering a love of learning in my students is my passion! Every child receives support during class and with many years of experience of working with children, I can offer a high level of expertise in developing ability and potential in any child. I am unreserved in recommending Kumon to nurture confident, resourceful students that can go on to excel in any field they choose.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
