About this centre

Welcome to the Kumon Scarborough Study Centre.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

Currently, the youngest student at the centre is four years old and the oldest is 15, however the Kumon study programmes are suitable for students of all ages and abilities. Three class assistants currently support the Instructor with the marking and recording of students work, listening to students read and working with the early learners.

Hello, my name is Paul Smith and I am the Instructor of the Kumon Scarborough Study Centre.

I always had a passion of wanting to go on and teach children. When engineering work declined, I decided to fulfil my passion and went on to study a PGCE at Sheffield Hallam University. Since completing my PGCE, I have worked in secondary schools as a mathematics teacher. I have also taught Science and Information Technology.

I first heard of Kumon in 1997 through a colleague who was also a Kumon Instructor and through teaching students that were also studying the Kumon programmes. This gave me a great insight into the benefits of the Kumon programmes and inspired me to become a Kumon Instructor myself. As a teacher, I always felt that there were gaps in students’ knowledge and felt that it was always impossible to fill these gaps due to time constraints on the curriculum. I have always aspired to develop independent learners and felt that Kumon would allow me to meet both of these needs.

One of the things that really motivates me is seeing primary school students’ master skills that are beyond their school year.
