About this centre

Established in 1996, the Sheffield South West Study Centre encourages children of all ages and abilities to strive for their full potential, in a friendly and supportive environment studying the Kumon Maths and English Programmes.

Many of the students who register at the centre are from the local area and attend local schools promoting a true community spirit. The study centre has an excellent reputation for nurturing academic performance, developing self-confidence, improving study discipline and encouraging a ‘have-a-go’ mentality.

Most students commit to studying at this centre for many years to ensure that they benefit fully from an individualised programme of study which is drawn up for them by their instructor, Catherine Potter. As a consequence, a high number of students who attend the centre study at an advanced level.

At the centre, Catherine is supported by assistants who understand the Kumon Programmes, as they have been Kumon students themselves. Having such good insight, enables assistants to build excellent relationships with the children and offer appropriate advice and support as required.

Kumon students can learn independently and are not intimidated when faced with unfamiliar work.

My name is Catherine Potter and I have been running the Sheffield South West Study Centre since it was established in 1996.

I have always wanted to teach and I was especially interested in mathematics. I enjoyed studying mathematics from an early age, being inspired by enthusiastic teachers who explained concepts clearly and who appreciated the importance of exposure to new, challenging material and independent study.

I studied mathematics at Sheffield University and was awarded a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education before being appointed as a mathematics teacher in a local secondary school (11-18 years).

My position as a Kumon Instructor has enabled me to nurture students to build their confidence through self-learning with worksheets tailored to their ability.

I feel fortunate to be a Kumon Instructor, as it is a great honour to be trusted with a child’s potential which, if fully nurtured, paves the way for great opportunity and success.
