The centre was opened in 1998, and is now a thriving and important part of the local community. The majority of students live in the local area and attend local schools. A dedicated team is on hand to assist maths and English students if required. More than 60% of current students are studying work that is advanced for their age.
At the Stevenage North Study Centre, there are students of all ages and abilities; at present the youngest student is four years old and the oldest student is 16. Eight of the students have attended the centre for more than six years and are all excelling on the maths and English programmes. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
Similar to other tuition providers the Kumon programmes focus on essential academic skills, but we go one step further by developing a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and all other aspects of adult life.
My name is Colette Allin and I have been a Kumon Instructor since June 1998. I am very committed to ensuring that every child in my centre develops to their full potential.
I have an excellent team of assistants who also support the students at the centre, and most of whom have studied Kumon at my centre when they were younger. Parents are given regular feedback regarding their child's study and I hold communication classes with parents to ensure they are aware of their child's development and next goals.
Through running my centre, I have seen how children can improve in their studies by giving them the confidence to learn for themselves. Students are encouraged to be independent in the classroom and improve on overall study skills like concentration and focus, as well as learning the maths and English topics.
My aim for the Stevenage North Study Centre is to promote a nurturing environment of growth and understanding for my students. My role is to guide and motivate students through the programmes, to set goals and targets together to ensure they are progressing and reaching their potential.
