About this centre

The Kumon Brighton, Hanover Study Centre opened in early 2013.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

The venue at the Phoenix Community Centre provides a bright and modern environment appropriate for learning; it caters comfortably for all students, from early learners to school leavers.

Instructor, Kumar Suresh, and his team of dedicated staff are on hand to help and support students.

As a Kumon student, your child will develop invaluable study skills and confidence as they become an independent learner. The team at the centre try to make their experience enjoyable as well as constructive, and hold an annual awards ceremony to recognise the hard word and achievements of its students.

My name is Kumar Suresh and I am pleased to be the Instructor at the Kumon Brighton, Hanover Study Centre. I previously spent ten years working as a maths teacher at a private school in Singapore. Moving to the UK, I continued teaching maths as I have a passion for education and enjoy shaping the minds of young people for the better; the Kumon programmes allow me to do this every day.

I was first attracted to Kumon upon noticing how well Kumon students performed in school. Seeing first-hand how effective the programmes were, I decided to become an Instructor. Both my sons are on the programmes and are greatly benefiting.

For me, the most rewarding part of my role is witnessing the sense of achievement that the students attain from overcoming a problem, whether small or large. I enjoy motivating them to do their best, and can make use of my experience and knowledge in the field of education.

Please get in touch to find out how I can help your child become the best they can be. It is my goal for every child entrusted to my care to fully develop in every area of their academic life, gain confidence and self-esteem, and grow up to be a well-rounded person in society.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

They don't. A Kumon student progresses based on their current ability and not their age, although we believe that every child has unlimited potential and can ultimately tackle advanced work through well-paced and individualised instruction. We have children of similar ages studying different material and children of different ages studying the same material. Everything is dependent on the student's needs, not on how old they are.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
