About our centre
Welcome to the Kumon Canterbury Study Centre.
The centre has been open over 10 years and is currently being run by Shona! I offer individualised maths and English programmes designed to help children of all ages and abilities – from as young as 3 up to 18 years old – reach their full potential.
The Kumon Canterbury study centre is a welcoming and happy place, where children feel encouraged and supported. What makes Kumon Canterbury unique is the way we tailor each student’s work to suit their individual needs and pace. Whether a child is looking for extra support or stretching beyond school level, we adapt to help them grow with confidence.
The team is made up of experienced, well-trained staff who are always on hand to guide and motivate students. At Kumon Canterbury, we focus on developing key learning skills such as confidence, independence, concentration, and a strong work ethic. Students learn to take ownership of their learning, becoming more self-reliant and motivated over time.
We believe every child can succeed with the right support, and we’re here to make that happen.
Come and see what makes our centre such a positive place.

About your Instructor
Hi, I’m Shona, and I’m proud to be the Instructor for Kumon Canterbury study centre. I strive to make learning both enjoyable and rewarding for every child. I graduated with First Class Honours in Business Marketing, and throughout my academic journey, I developed a strong appreciation for the value of self- learning and perseverance—two principles at the heart of the Kumon Method.
Learning is truly a passion of mine, and I firmly believe that with the right support, encouragement, and structure, every child can unlock their full potential. My goal is to create an engaging, welcoming, and positive learning environment where students feel confident, motivated, and inspired to reach their goals at their own individual pace.
Kumon has been a part of my life from a young age. I have served as a Kumon Senior Assistant for four years before taking over Kumon Canterbury from my mother Kathryn. She was a Kumon Instructor for over 10 years, and growing up alongside her work, I saw first-hand the impact Kumon can have on children's confidence and academic growth. Her dedication inspired me, and I carry that same passion and insight into my own instruction.
I look forward to supporting your child’s learning journey and helping them develop skills that will benefit them beyond the classroom. I’d love to meet you—come have a chat, no obligations.
We look forward to meeting you!
Frequently Asked Questions
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
