Repeating and reciting

Levels 7A to 6A engage students with the concept of reading through repeating and reciting. Learners point to and repeat simple familiar words that are both written and shown as vibrant illustrations. This helps them to associate spoken words with their written form. Through practice they move from repeating after the Instructor to reciting to the Instructor, as they start to memorise and recognise familiar words.

Learning to read and write

Levels 5A to 2A move learners from repeating and reciting to fluently reading words and short sentences aloud. They begin to trace words and learn letter sounds and how to blend them, all the time increasing their vocabulary. They also start to work on spelling patterns. By the end of level 2A they will be able to read short passages as well as write words independently and neatly. Throughout these levels, students are working to develop a sound study approach.

Sentence building

Levels A to C help students to put together simple sentences and understand more about their structure, expressions and punctuation. They build reading speed whilst being able to visualise the contents of the passage they are reading and grasp its meaning. They work on sentence complexity learning how to use the correct word order, verb forms and punctuation and use these skills to answer questions fully.

Paragraph building

From levels D to F students work on grasping the flow of a story, identifying topics and main ideas, using many texts from the Kumon Recommended Reading List. In their reading they learn how to deduce the point of each paragraph and to express their understanding in written form through restatement and description. By the end of level F they will be able to unravel text and break it down to understand its topic and conclusion.

Summarisation

Levels G to I start to work on the students’ ability to express their own impressions of texts and to understand the sentiments of characters, including variations of mood and action, and how that is expressed. They learn how to summarise text, identifying key words and their relationship to each other, as well as answering comprehension questions concisely, drawing reasoned conclusions from the information they have read.

Critique

Levels J to L further enhance students critical reading skills developing their understanding of plot, atmosphere, irony and comedy, as well as analysing literary characters. They build understanding of language complexity covering figurative language like metaphors, similes and symbols. Students consolidate their skills learnt thus far by writing a comment on a passage from an objective standpoint. Our learners are often inspired by the passages they cover, going on to read many of the books on Kumon’s Recommended Reading List.

Counting

Levels 6A to 4A aims for students to be able to recite numbers and count whilst pointing to the written numbers. At this level our worksheets make strong use of images, dot pictures and number tables to enable early learners to recognise, recite, read and understand number sequence, gradually increasing exposure to a larger range of numbers as they become ready. They first focus on numbers 1-5, then 1-10, 11-20 and so on, all the way up to 100, as well as writing numbers independently up to 50.

Four Operations

Levels 3A to D deepens number sequence understanding before introducing the main operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Each operation is introduced with smaller numbers and single digits at first, increasing to larger numbers and double digits and so on. The methodology is also gradually advanced, from horizontal to vertical addition and subtraction, as well as multiplication and division, through small steps and half-worked questions to help children progress.

Fractions

In levels E and F students get to grips with fractions, enabling them to complete addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions through examples and introductory problems. As their confidence and speed grows they move on to more complex problems, learning the correct order of steps to work out the solution, finding the Least Common Denominators and Least Common Multiples, working up to three fractions and four operations. Learners will also start to become more familiar with decimals.

Basic Algebra

Levels G to I aims to help students master positive and negative numbers using the four operations, as well as algebraic expressions and equations. Students are encouraged to write out the steps that they make to get to the solution until they are familiar with the process. Algebraic complexity increases, completing operations with monomials and then polynomials before moving on to factorisation, square roots, quadratic equations and functions and Pythagorean Theorem. Students build the skills to solve problems accurately, writing down appropriate intermediate steps.

Functions

Level J fully develops student’s algebraic skills before the next level moves on to tackle the basic properties of functions. Students gradually increase their understanding of functions by tackling problems of greater complexity, before moving on to logarithms, limits, differentiation and integration. Students then develop the skills to work with trigonometric functions and equations of straight lines and circles.

Calculus

Levels N and O build the skills needed for advanced integration and differential equations after improving their understanding on limits. Skills that children have built up throughout the maths programme culminate at this point in their ability to complete high school mathematical problems based on their calculation skills developed so far and a sense for graphs. They will also have developed the necessary skills to progress further through self-learning as they will be used to using examples, hints and solution books to understand and execute complex mathematical concepts.
