About this centre
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. The youngest student at the centre is currently five years old and the oldest is 12 years old, however the Kumon programmes are suitable for students of all ages and abilities.
The study room can be easily located by the A-frame outside of the venue and the leaflets and roll-up banner in the reception/waiting area. The study room is clearly sign-posted from reception.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies. The Instructor is supported by a class assistant who works with newly enrolled students and early learners. The class assistant also supports with the marking and recording of students work.
There are supplementary activities in the centre such as Numberboards, as well as a selection of books available from the Kumon Recommended Reading List.
My name is Paul Daglish and I am the Instructor of the Darlington Study Centre.
I applied to become a Kumon Instructor as I am very committed to ensuring that each and every child is able to develop their full potential. Having worked in an education background for a number of years, I have experience of working with students of all ages and abilities and have provided academic and pastoral support.
I was interested in the Kumon programmes because they offer the opportunity to every child to work at their own pace and their own level of understanding and this is something that I believe is invaluable in supporting a child’s education.
I find my role as a Kumon Instructor extremely rewarding and I love to hear how students have progressed in school through their work at Kumon. I attend ongoing training sessions that are provided by Kumon to ensure that I can fully support all students that attend the centre.
My aim for the Darlington Study Centre is to promote a nurturing environment of growth and understanding for my students. The centre enrols students all year round. For further information, an informal chat or to visit the centre, please do not hesitate to give me a call.

To get your child started with Kumon study you will pay a one off registration fee to register them as a student
Study takes around 30 minutes per subject a day, depending on age and level of the work. At the moment, study is at home but classes will be open for study again as soon as it is safe to do so.

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
