About this centre

In-Centre Class available Ofsted Registered KUMON CONNECT available Childcare vouchers accepted Online Class available

The centre opened in 2009 and provides maths and English study programmes to children of all ages and ability. There are currently approximately 70 students, some studying single subject but most studying both subjects.

Working alongside the Instructor are a team of six assistants. The friendly and professional team runs a well organised centre with close attention to detail to ensure that each student's needs are understood and catered for as they develop through the programme.

Timeslots are allocated to ensure your child's learning is as enjoyable as possible; to keep them motivated and to achieve their long-term learning goals. The Instructor provides feedback, encouragement and a tailored plan to help each student excel.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Similar to other tuition providers the Kumon programmes focus on essential academic skills, but we go one step further by developing a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and all other aspects of adult life.

Kumon is a fantastic base for all examinations eg SATs, 11+ and GCSEs. Our programme gives every child the necessary skills to be able to follow examples and work logically, quickly and efficiently. The Kumon programme instils resilience and confidence to try new and advanced work, from foundation building to exploring new topics independently. Children become used to being tested under timed conditions after completing most levels.

Once a fortnight, there is a mobile library service opposite the centre on Beechglade Road.

About the Instructor

Handsworth Wood - Narjis Shah

My name is Narjis Shah and I am the Instructor at the Handsworth Wood Study Centre.

I graduated with a politics degree in 2001 and later went on to get my Post Graduate Certificate, Post Graduate Diploma and finally my MA in Human Resource Management with accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

I first heard about Kumon in 2003 when my nephew was studying the programme. I had seen the benefits of Kumon and was excited to learn of an opportunity to become a Kumon Instructor. As a parent, I am conscious that my children feel confident and inquisitive at school and I have seen the benefits of this with the Kumon programmes.

Furthermore, as an Instructor I still get a thrill seeing children learning by examples with simple instructions, bringing their learning into action. I nurture by not telling a child what to think but how to think. I have always had a passion for education and love to see children do well not only academically but also in personality, through encouragement and support.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
