The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes enable students of all ages and abilities to achieve. Our aim at the Kumon Handsworth Study Centre is for every student to become an independent, advanced learner, with a positive attitude to study.
We encourage students to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and are able to face unfamiliar work. By daily study of the unique Kumon worksheets, at home and twice weekly at the centre, students will develop invaluable study skills and build in confidence. They will strive to study above their school grade, enabling them to realise their potential both at school and beyond.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
Please note: Entrance to the study centre is between Handsworth College and State Bank of India.
Hello, my name is Gurprite Lohia and I am the Instructor at the Handsworth Study Centre. After graduating from university in 2002 I went onto study my PGCE in teaching and have since worked in various roles within education.
I am a big believer in learning and believe it does not end when you get to a certain age or level. Whilst working as an Assistant Head Teacher I began to study towards achieving a masters in Education and Leadership; this was a big undertaking for I took on the additional challenge of studying part time whilst working full time, however through this I was able to recognise my own potential. My aim is to nurture this same positive attitude to learning in my students by setting personalised goals, being available to support them in developing study skills and that all important inner confidence.
I decided to become a Kumon Instructor after seeing first-hand the benefits Kumon had on my nieces and nephews. I am really excited about instructing my own centre; it will give me the opportunity to continue my love for learning and meet a range of children who I know can develop even further through the Kumon Method of Learning and with my support.
Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information about the Handsworth Study Centre.

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
