About this centre

Online Class available KUMON CONNECT available Ofsted Registered Childcare vouchers accepted

The Kumon Maidstone South Study Centre provides individualised maths and English programmes for children of all ages and abilities. We also warmly welcome preschoolers for whom there is dedicated support available.

The unique programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The study centre is based at the Maidstone YMCA, located just minutes from the town centre.

Students usually study in class for between 30 minutes to an hour. The atmosphere is calm, friendly and relaxed. Progress is celebrated and our students are rewarded when they reach key milestones in the programmes. Regular parents' evenings are held to keep you updated on your child's progress.

Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.

Our students are from the local and neighbouring areas and attend both state and independent schools. Starting at a level appropriate for them, students usually reach a standard equivalent to a year above their school grade or more, within the first year of joining us.

Did you know, you can now study Kumon using digital worksheets? This study centre is proud to offer KUMON CONNECT. Click here to find out more.

As an Ofsted registered centre, parents can make considerable savings through various schemes.

About the Instructor

Davina Ford - Maidstone South Study Centre

My name is Rowan Davina Foord (known as Davina) and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Maidstone South Study Centre.

I have a strong educational background spanning the early years, primary, secondary and higher education sectors.

As a Kumon parent, I have seen first-hand how the learning method can build a child’s confidence, improve their study skills and demonstrably improve their school performance across all areas of the curriculum. My daughters’ progress through the programmes, together with my personal commitment to children’s education, inspired me to embark on my own Kumon journey as an Instructor.

What I love about the study programmes is they are individually tailored to meet every child’s needs, not dependant on age or curriculum but on ability. The potential is therefore limitless. It is a real pleasure to witness how children, as well as developing core skills in maths and English, have grown in confidence and developed advanced problem-solving skills that will benefit them enormously throughout their lives.

I feel privileged to play a role in your child’s education through the Kumon programmes and I look forward to welcoming you to my centre.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
