The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes aim to bring out the best in every child, regardless of age or ability, and help them to reach their potential and foster a love of learning. Through individualised programmes with work set at just the right level, your child will be able to build strong learning foundations, not only developing ability in maths and English but transferable skills that will help them achieve across all subjects.

The Instructor and his team of helpful class assistants provide an encouraging, supportive and friendly atmosphere. We help students from pre-school to A Level develop strong independent study skills and good work habits, alongside improving their maths and English skills.

Children learn through example questions in our worksheets along with Instructor guidance. This method of learning offers so much more than traditional tuition: it nurtures your child’s independence, developing strong self-learning skills to give them the tools to help them excel in the future. Because Kumon does not follow the school curriculum and work is set according to ability, irrespective of age, our programmes allow learners both to fill in any missing gaps in their study foundations as well as the opportunity to work ahead of their school grade level. Your local Instructor will assess your child to determine at what point in the programme they should begin their Kumon study, then through daily work coupled with up to two weekly study centre visits, they will build both self-confidence and crucial skills in small manageable steps.

We look forward to welcoming you at the centre.

My name is Tom Roche and I have been a Kumon Instructor at Mere Green Community Centre since 2012. Before my role as a Kumon Instructor I spent two decades in training and recruitment, with a specialisation in training adults in computer skills. I also spent six years writing and performing comedy!

About ten years ago, when helping my brother improve his children's maths skills, I found the Kumon programme. I was immediately knocked out by how it not just helped children progress in Maths and English, but how it also fostered self-confidence and the ability to work independently. I was so impressed that shortly after I applied to become an instructor, and I have never looked back. Helping children grow and progress is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.

One of my favourite features of the Kumon programme is how it recognises that each child is unique. It's fantastic for me to be able to provide tailor-made instruction to each and every student. I look forward to welcoming you and your child to the Mere Green Study Centre and beginning their Kumon journey.

Most Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
