About this centre
The Kumon North Shields Study Centre has been established for seven years, running out of its current premises since 2015. During this time children have been able to discover and unlock their potential in maths and English by following the Kumon programmes.
Kumon is suitable for all ages, however we currently have students between the ages of four to 13 years. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
We currently have four assistants working in the centre, most of which have been Kumon students themselves.
As a Kumon student your child will develop invaluable study skills to enable them to become motivated, confident and independent learners. Kumon’s long-term goal enables children to take learning into their own hands, increasing their drive to succeed in whatever their future holds.
My name is Lisa, I took over the Kumon North Shields Study Centre in May 2017.
I have always had a keen interest in education. Having worked with many families, children and schools, I have become acutely aware of the importance of giving children the opportunity to become successful and take pride in their achievements. My experience has demonstrated repeatedly that if children are given the opportunity to develop self-confidence and motivation, through praise, positivity and reward they are more likely to develop into well-rounded, independent and positive adults. I feel that this viewpoint fits very nicely with the ethos of the Kumon Method of Learning, and I hope to be able to apply this philosophy to the students within my centre.
When I discovered Kumon, I instantly felt very passionate towards this learning method, and wanted to be able to offer this not only to my children, but also to as many other children as possible. This is how and when I decided to embark on a career change and retrain with Kumon.
Becoming a Kumon Instructor was the perfect solution for my family, but also gave me the wonderful opportunity to bring Kumon to others. Being a Kumon Instructor is a privilege and I am very much looking forward to seeing your child begin their Kumon journey too.

Most Popular Questions
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
