For more than 60 years, the Kumon Maths and English Programmes continue to provide students with the tools they need to enjoy learning. This is not primarily through teaching but through self-learning. Our goal is to develop confident, independent, and advanced learners who rise to the challenge of new work. We don’t just want students to be good at maths and English, we want them to become self-sufficient, preparing them for personal and professional success later in life.

Kumon students develop fundamental study skills which enable them to reach an advanced level of study, often far beyond their school curriculum. We are not limited by age or curriculum, so students can progress to the next level at their own pace. Upon enrolment, each child will go through an initial assessment to ensure the work set is at just the right level for them. Through daily worksheet study, Kumon students develop ability and fluency.

Our individualised study programmes are for students from pre-school all the way up to A-level. Your child will attend the centre either once or twice a week depending on whether they will be studying both the maths and English programmes or one of the two.

About the Instructor

Instructor Shaofeng Liu of the Kumon Reading, Whitley Study Centre
Growing up in China, the importance of diligence, independent learning and self-discipline have been instilled in me since childhood. This is why I wholeheartedly believe in the Kumon method as I used these skills to help me excel throughout my academic career. After achieving a law degree in China and a Master’s in Marketing Management from the University of Salford, I worked in the commercial business unit of a well-known international bank.

As a mother, I continually research the best educational methods for my son and so I was intrigued to discover more about Kumon. After reading about the Kumon Method of Learning, I immediately enrolled my son and noticed the many benefits he experienced. This encouraged me to become an Instructor as I was interested in providing a tailored learning experience for students in my local community.

I believe every child is capable of achieving their dreams. My staff and I are very compassionate and understanding of each child’s current ability, and we provide a nurturing environment to encourage them to reach their full potential. I am committed to developing the potential of each individual child to help them achieve success in whatever they want to do in life. Whatever path they wish to take in life; whether they want to become a scientist, artist or mathematician, any student willing to commit to daily Kumon study can achieve greatness!

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
