The centre was established in 1998 and enjoys a reputation for the success of its students amongst the local community. 

At the Southend East Study Centre, there are 12 class assistants trained in different areas of Kumon study, supporting over 150 students of different ages and abilities.

Students can start Kumon study at any age from pre-school upwards. Most students enter the classroom independently, although pre-schoolers are offered assistance. These young students work with an early learning assistant in order to develop strong work skills, progressing to our supported learning area until they are ready to self-learn in order to realise their full potential in maths and English.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Many students continue their learning to GCSE and A-levels, and a number have completed the programmes.

The Southend East Study Centre sets goals to motivate and encourage students. Staff acknowledge student achievements along the way but celebrate them more publicly at their annual presentation ceremony.

The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.

How long does study take?

The time taken to complete a day's work may be around 30 minutes per subject. The study time is down to each individual and their current study level. Class times displayed may include a combination of in-centre and online class sessions. Please contact your Instructor for further details.

8 months and my little one has developed / progressed so much . Confidence in maths is what I was looking for and he is smashing his maths at school ! He is always competing with himself and knows that he starts as beguiner on each level then practicioner and then ready to be a master so this helps his massively in resiliency and knows that he has to make mistakes to learn and progress and become better and better . Very happy with kumon and I see the results so he will continue with it . Discipline with a good routine is important to keep so this is something that helps every day even if we have to fly for holidays, never we miss a day as it’s part of our daily routine We love kumon 💙

I used the Kumon maths programme for both my daughters to supplement and reinforce their understanding of key maths principles. As a secondary maths teacher I am acutely aware of they key concepts that need to be grasped in primary and built upon in secondary school. The Kumon programme delivered these well and gave the added bonus of the discipline of everyday learning to aid long term retention. Both my daughters have thrived through :primary school awards for maths, the Level G certificate in primary for one daughter and admission to the high school we had selected. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and hardworking. I highly recommend Kumon to parents wanting their children to improve their subject knowledge and to develop learning habits that they can use throughout their education journey.

I started Kumon when I was in year 8 and I had a lot of gaps that needed to filled in English and Maths. Throughout lockdown I continued to do Kumon and saw my consistency increase. Now that I’m in year 10 due to Kumon and Alison and the team’s help I have been able to move up to top set in maths at school and have improved immensely at school throughout all my studies. I would really like to thank everyone at the centre that been helping me through this journey. For those who are struggling in Maths or English I highly recommend you join Kumon.

Thank you very much for all the dedication and support you provided, along my daughters learning journey. Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
