The Kumon Method is well known for its effectiveness and ability to deliver proven academic results. What is less widely recognised is how beneficial Kumon can be for the youngest of children. As the Kumon programmes help students to build essential study skills and a good foundation for learning, starting Kumon early on in a child’s academic career can have lasting positive effects.
One student who has experienced the benefits of an early start is Jeremy, a seven-year-old boy who attends the Kumon Eastbourne Study Centre. Jeremy began studying with Kumon at just five years old. We spoke with Jeremy’s mother, Priyanka, about how Kumon has helped him thrive:
“A friend of ours was sending their child to Kumon and we were impressed by the good effect that we saw it having on their child. Jeremy is a smart boy, and I wanted him to continue to do well in school and reach his full potential, so I decided we would also send him to Kumon!
“When Jeremy started at Kumon, we wondered how he would cope as he wasn’t used to the structure at all. We would sit with him and encourage him to keep his focus on the worksheets and he soon adjusted and now he is very independent in doing his homework. The daily activity is part of his routine now, so we don’t even have to tell him to do it… that often! That’s a wonderful change and it is great to see him so motivated.”
The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes are international and aren’t tied to any national curriculum. This means students can take the time they need to master challenging material and move ahead when ready. They study the subjects in depth, not just that required to pass school exams. For Priyanka, this flexibility was especially valuable:
“The teaching methods in schools in England are different to those used in India. I’ve heard some of the English parents say they are also different to what they were taught at school! Because of this, we found it hard to help Jeremy with his school homework. The Kumon worksheets were helpful because they guided him and encouraged him to work things out for himself. He developed his own methods for learning. This helped him get ahead with his day-to-day studies in school.”
Thanks to this support, Jeremy has advanced well beyond his classmates — a reflection of the Kumon Method’s ability to deliver proven academic results.
“He’s really brilliant in maths – his mental maths is very good compared to other children and his English is strong too. We’re hearing the same feedback from his schoolteachers and his Kumon Instructor, so it is good to see the progress he has made from his work at Kumon.”
Jeremy’s Instructor, Anupama, is very proud of her student and was keen to share with us what an excellent learner he is:
“When I first met Jeremy at his enrolment meeting, I could see he was very eager and confident, keen to show me what he could do. He was listening intently, and I knew then I could set ambitious targets for us to achieve together. We are all so pleased for the joy he takes in his achievements.
“Jeremy always comes into class smiling and ready to learn. When the work gets tricky, Jeremy perseveres, which plays a huge part of his development into an advanced student. His parents have always been very encouraging and have created a supportive learning environment at home.”
It's easy to forget how young Jeremy still is, given the incredible progress he’s made in the two years, since starting Kumon at the age of five. This early start has helped him build strong study habits and essential self-learning skills that will benefit him throughout his life, setting him up for long-term academic success.
