What are Kumon’s virtual classes?
During Kumon’s virtual classes, students complete their Kumon worksheets at home under the observation of your Instructor and class assistants using a videoconferencing platform. Similar to studying in a physical classroom, the purpose of virtual classes is to allow your Instructor and class assistants to gauge students’ performance while working, enabling them to provide guidance as needed, share feedback on work and provide the structure and motivation students need for successful progress.

Self-learning, not tutoring
When studying at the virtual centre, students will usually have the camera pointed at their work, not their face. Unlike traditional tutoring methods, where children are taught and shown how to complete work, your child’s Instructor will be observing how they complete the worksheets so as to provide them with the specific guidance that they need. This reinforces the core of the Kumon Method – to teach students to learn independently.

This is a virtual Kumon study centre for UK and Ireland residents only.

Popular Questions

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon students can use their own tablet and stylus for Kumon study using KUMON CONNECT, which has been developed to be compatible with the following devices:
  • Apple iPad 6th generation or later and accompanying stylus
  • Apple iPad Air 3rd generation or later and accompanying stylus
  • Apple iPad Pro 11 3rd generation or later and accompanying stylus
  • Apple iPad Pro 12.9 3rd generation or later and accompanying stylus
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 lite and accompanying stylus
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S7/S7+ and accompanying stylus
  • Samsung S8, S8+ and stylus
Other high specification tablets and stylus pens with palm rejection capabilities may also be compatible with KUMON CONNECT, though compatibility cannot be guaranteed. Please enquire with your local Instructor about a tablet checking site which can be used to indicate if your alternative tablet may be suitable.
Kumon was, in fact, designed to be a home study programme! Our founder, Toru Kumon, started the Kumon programme as a father creating worksheets for his son to study independently at home. With daily practice, his son’s maths ability naturally began to improve and so did his confidence. He allowed his son to study by himself and to complete any corrections. Because the worksheets were individualised to his level, he was able to progress smoothly and quickly to concepts far beyond what he experienced at school. As such, Kumon is completely suited to the home study environment.

Your Instructor will provide necessary input in terms of ongoing feedback, assessment, and guidance. This is achieved through careful monitoring of student results and progress, ongoing communication with you and your child, and occasionally some additional observation and guidance through online tools.
