About this centre
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
Since opening in 2012, the Walsall, Caldmore Study Centre has nurtured hundreds of students aged three to 16, to help them develop the necessary skills to tackle work beyond their school level. We have seen children who lacked in confidence come running into class eager to show off their latest achievement certificates from school.
At Kumon, we realise that each child is different and learn in different ways. The free assessment we carry out provides a starting point appropriate to your child’s current level of ability and identifies any areas needing development. A study plan is then drawn up and, as your child moves through the programme, their progress is continuously monitored, with the aim of reaching an advanced level.
Students complete daily worksheets and visit the centre once or twice a week. When in class, your child’s study skills are observed and developed in line with the Kumon Method of Learning.
Similar to other tuition providers the Kumon programmes focus on essential academic skills, but we go one step further by developing a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and all other aspects of adult life.
My name is Sue Basra and I have been a Kumon Instructor for over six years.
I was fully aware of the Kumon programmes as my older daughters also studied with Kumon. I know how important it is to establish a daily routine and as a parent can identify with other parents' joy when their child achieves success and also as and when they experience a problem.
Since opening my centre I have developed a wealth of experience and have enjoyed success with hundreds of students. As an Instructor I still get a thrill seeing children learning by examples with simple instructions, bringing their learning into action. I nurture by not telling a child what to think but how to think. I have always had a passion for education and love to see children do well not only academically but also in personality, through encouragement and support.
It is a very pleasing thought to have had so many students/siblings from recommendation as this shows that our parents are happy with the level of service they are receiving.

Most Popular Questions
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
