About this centre

Newly launched in 2020, the Kumon Walton-on-Thames Study Centre is situated in the heart of the town and welcomes students of all ages and abilities.

Kumon provides Maths and English Study Programmes which enable children to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to thoroughly understand these subjects, which are key to all-round academic achievement. However, Kumon is unlike traditional tuition and has a unique method which develops independent learning skills and increases self-confidence, allowing students to overcome challenges on their own and be less reliant on a teacher. Our staff are fully trained to help your child become an independent, advanced learner with a positive attitude to study.

Kumon is not based on the school curriculum or the student’s age.  On first visiting the centre, your child will be assessed by the Instructor who will set work for them at the just right level, ensuring they complete the worksheets in small, manageable steps and enabling us to build a strong foundation in the Kumon study method. Through daily worksheets the Instructor will get to know each student’s individual needs and each child will progress step by step through the programme developing skills, pace, fluency and concentration. With the right work and motivation, each student can progress and has the power to achieve beyond their school grade level.

The centre aims to meet the needs of each individual child and encourage and motivate them to achieve their best and love learning. We look forward to meeting you.
My name is Candice and I am the instructor at the Kumon Walton-on-Thames Study Centre. Originally a Chartered Accountant, a desire to work with children led me to the education sector where I have been working in primary schools for many years.

I believe that education provides children with the best opportunities to succeed in life. I have two children myself and understand how each child’s ability, development and learning needs are different. Both of my children have studied the Kumon programmes and I have personally seen the positive impact it makes - helping them become independent learners and excel academically. I truly believe in the Kumon Method of Learning and seeing my own children progress first-hand motivated me to become a Kumon Instructor. Being a Kumon Instructor is very rewarding job as I have the ability to make a difference in each of my students lives.

I would be delighted to welcome you to the Kumon Walton-on-Thames Study centre. As a parent I understand that you want the best for your child, and we will work in partnership towards the same shared goal: your child becoming an independent learner and achieving their best potential.

Most Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
