The Kumon West Bromwich Study Centre is located in the Lodge Community Centre. The centre provides a safe and welcoming environment for children and their education.
The study centre has grown steadily over the years and is now well known within the local community. Students of all ages and abilities benefit from Kumon with current students at the centre including: pre-school children, primary and secondary school students who come from all over the area.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. The initial assessment of each child will assess where on the programme the child will start. At Kumon, we ensure all students work to their own individualised work study programmes to allow them to reach their full potential at the right pace for them.
Kumon encourages students to take learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
My name is Sue Dehal. I opened the West Bromwich Study Centre in June 2015 and it has been an extremely rewarding journey for me.
I discovered Kumon when my son was in Year 1 and struggling to keep up with his maths. Coming from a maths background myself, I decided to enrol him in the Kumon Maths and English Programmes. Within six months, he was at school grade level and by Year 4 he was working two years ahead of school grade level. He is now confident in maths that it has become his favourite subject. I found the same benefits with his English; from a boy who disliked reading, he soon developed a love for reading and this has helped in all his subject areas.
I found that repetition and consistency was key to his self-learning. I loved the Kumon programmes so much that I decided to become a Kumon Instructor and open my own centre so I could provide this opportunity to other children.
I have always had a passion for education and love to see children do well not only academically but also in personality, through encouragement and support.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
They don't. A Kumon student progresses based on their current ability and not their age, although we believe that every child has unlimited potential and can ultimately tackle advanced work through well-paced and individualised instruction. We have children of similar ages studying different material and children of different ages studying the same material. Everything is dependent on the student's needs, not on how old they are.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
