Mayor helps Ashford Kumon students celebrate their achievements

4 June 2018

It was celebrations all-round when the local Kumon families of Ashford, Kent came together last month to recognise the amazing academic feats of their children.

Over 65 families from neighbouring Kumon centres, Ashford North and Ashford South, gathered for the special event where students were presented with certificates for reaching high levels of study, above that of their school grade, in the core subjects of maths and English.

As the UK’s largest supplementary education provider, Kumon aims for each and every child studying on the programmes to reach an advanced level of study, with a positive, ‘can-do’ approach to learning. Impressively all students who received an award are taking charge of their own learning journey and developing the confidence and independence to strive for their own goals and aspirations.

A highlight of the event was local mayor Cllr Winston Michael’s inspiring speech, in which he spoke of how the students’ commitment to their studies now will have lasting long-term effects by helping them to achieve a bright, enriched future.

Mastery
Kumon Area Manager, Alaina Lewis, also gave a speech about mastery; a buzz word within education these past years, yet a fundamental component of the Kumon Method since its creation 60 years’ ago.

The Kumon programmes place an emphasis on practice, fluency, and thorough understanding. Like learning a new piece of music, pupils may see the same content more than once to help them develop mastery before moving on. This approach to embedding fluency and mastery coupled with daily practice of work helps children to commit learning to their long-term memory and build up instant recall of key knowledge.

Instructors Jyoti and Liz were keen to recognise the important role the parents play in their child’s Kumon journey and successes, “the ceremony provides the perfect opportunity for us to thank our parents for everything they do to support their children”, said Jyoti.

Congratulations to all the students at the Kumon Ashford North and Ashford South Study Centres who are achieving remarkable things!
