"I believe Kumon is the reason why my maths has improved, and without it I wouldn't have achieved an A in my GCSE maths and wouldn't have even attempted A-level!"
Shahida Hussain
I have been the Kumon Instructor at the Abbots Langley Kumon Centre since 1 February 2010.
I would like to share with you a little about my Kumon journey that started as a parent in 2004, when my daughter Amani was struggling at school and having a problem retaining academic information. I did not know which way to turn for help for her, as my frustrations were hindering me to support her in her learning. At that point my sister suggested either a personal tutor or Kumon. After investigating the programme I invited the instructor to visit me at home and assess my daughter, and it was really during this enrolment I remember hearing the key words repetition, daily study and confidence. And I was sold.
The words enrichment, nurturing, self learning were not part of the Kumon programme at that point, or did I just not hear them? At that stage I not only enrolled Amani but also my two other children with dual subjects. And I have never looked back.
Amani became an English completer in 2009, and was the youngest student to become a completer from the Berkhamsted study centre. What I did not realise then is what Kumon would really be able to providing us with. Able, independent, focused and disciplined students. In fact, excellent students from whom I as a parent could learn from. The tables had truly turned.
What Kumon has done for my children is ultimately given them the confidence to excel and has developed them into becoming self learners. With maths in particular, all three of my children have such strong mental ability to calculate and problem solve, and are never fazed with new or challenging work. They work quickly and methodically and never fear the unknown. They all work above their own chronological age courtesy of being long term Kumon students. I have always encouraged and shown my children that they can achieve anything and be anyone they want to be through sheer hard work, determination and self belief. This is also the Kumon ethos.
Becoming an instructor was a natural progression from being a long term Kumon parent, and being able to share the benefits of the programme with others.
Through my Kumon journey I have met so many amazing students and parents, from many walks of life, who have brought so much enrichment into my personal life.
When I first enrolled on this journey it was all about being able to pass on the opportunity of excelling through the Kumon experience. I fly the flag for Kumon. I am passionate and driven by the belief in the programme, and speaking as a parent I know that it works and I have proof that it is successful.
