"I believe Kumon is the reason why my maths has improved, and without it I wouldn't have achieved an A in my GCSE maths and wouldn't have even attempted A-level!"
This is my opportunity to introduce myself and to tell you why I wanted to become the Kumon Instructor for Canterbury.
Here's a little about my background.
I am a fully qualified secondary school science teacher with 9 years experience in different types of schools. In Wiltshire, I taught for several years in a "proper" Comprehensive school (no 11 plus examination) teaching all sciences to GCSE and A level Biology. In Kent, I taught at Herne Bay High School for many years, this time teaching Chemistry at A level.
I returned to work as a part-time classroom assistant at the Abbey School , after a career break to raise my children to school age. I have been working with those students who need help to ensure they can maximise their learning potential during their time in education.
Why become a Kumon Instructor?
I realised in Year 3 of our daughter's schooling that there were gaps in her fundamental understanding of maths, that were causing Madeliene problems in junior school. As she tried to work through more difficult concepts, her insecure "foundations" were no longer able to support her on her journey through the maths curriculum.
It was not that Madeleine hadn't been taught all that she needed to know; it was that she hadn't had the opportunity to master each concept before being moved on to the next.
Her End of Term Year 4 Report (July 2008) reflects the difference Kumon has made to her understanding, her confidence and her approach to her work, just 8 months after starting Kumon! We, as parents, are delighted for her.
She is thrilled herself.
I have spent my entire teaching career watching students struggling at school because they are trying to build their on-going education on weak foundations. Discovering Kumon for my child made me realise that the fundamentals at the heart of the Kumon method are those that I now believe are crucial to enabling each child to reach his or her full potential.
I have decided that I no longer want to react to the problems faced by students "battling" their way through their education. I want to be proactive and provide the opportunity for as many students as possible to have access to this method of learning.
I have come to this belief on my journey through the education system as a teacher, a parent and a classroom assistant.
This is why I have become a Kumon Instructor, and I plan to make a big a difference to the educational progress of our local children as I can through our Kumon Study Centre.
