About this centre

In-Centre Class available KUMON CONNECT available

The Kumon maths and English Study Programmes enable children of any age and ability to develop key foundations for learning. Our unique study method focuses on enabling children to work independently, giving them confidence in their abilities. They progress through small steps to gradually develop ability and fluency before moving on to the next topic. Kumon study is not based on school curriculum or age, allowing children the flexibility to revisit and build skills where they need to and progress beyond school level where their ability allows. Unlike traditional tuition, Kumon study fosters students’ skill in self-learning, building confidence and lessening reliance on a teacher.

Your child will be assessed to enable their Instructor to set work at just the right level for them. Through daily worksheet study they develop ability and fluency. Your child will visit their local study centre for study sessions twice a week, where their Instructor will observe their learning growth and set work accordingly. Kumon’s aim is to develop each child into a confident, independent and enthusiastic learner.

About the Instructor

Newport West - Heather Jones

I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2007 and I have loved every minute of it! Previously, I was Head of Maths in secondary schools in Bristol and Gloucestershire and taught maths to students aged from 11 to 18.

As a teacher, it is immensely satisfying when students have a 'light bulb' moment when they finally understand something they have previously found difficult. Every class as a Kumon Instructor gives me that feeling that what I do is worthwhile.

All students benefit from studying with Kumon by developing their self-learning skills and their independence, often exceeding their own expectations of what they can do.

Many of my students start in primary school and continue their study into secondary school. As a Kumon Instructor, I am in a unique position able to provide continuity in education through that often challenging time.

At Kumon, students move on when they are ready. I monitor their progress very carefully every week. This means that if someone needs extra practice to master a particular skill, they get it, and if someone can move on, they do. This builds confidence, and a desire to succeed.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
