About this centre
The Kumon Harborne Study Centre has been running since 2010. During this time we have helped hundreds of students unlock their potential on our maths and English programmes. Kumon is a programme for children of all ages and abilities; currently students at the centre range in age from three to 16 years old.
Everything within the classroom is designed to be conducive to learning and our priority always remains developing your child.
Working at the centre we have two Instructors, an office coordinator, a receptionist, one senior class assistant and a team of eight highly trained assistants, all of whom are passionate about the development of each student and strive to provide an excellent customer service to anyone who enquires at our centre.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
Hello, I am Kate and I joined Kumon in 2014 after working within a variety of education roles. My previous experience in education has ranged from working as a lecturer in A-levels and GCSE to tutoring Year 5 students for the 11+ entry exams.
What impressed me most about Kumon was how central its students are to everything that it does. Kumon strives to fit the learning to the child; not the child to the learning, which I feel inspired by.
Instructing students is the most rewarding part of my role. Watching a child learn something for the first time by themselves is just as rewarding for me as it is for the student. Knowing that we have made a positive difference in so many students’ lives makes me extremely proud.
Hello, my name is Harmeet and after graduating in 2011 with a combined honours degree, I began working at the Kumon Harborne Centre as a class assistant and very quickly recognised the benefit Kumon study has on children of any age and ability.
My role as a Kumon Instructor is the most rewarding job I have ever had. Seeing students develop their confidence whilst studying advanced material is incredible and I strongly believe that every child has the potential to learn and improve.
Every child is different and Kumon allows us to offer individualised instruction, pursue the potential of every child, and instil a positive attitude towards learning, all within a highly motivating environment. I love my job and feel a great sense of achievement every day.

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
